Hikurangi Repo gravity gate opening

Hikurangi Repo gravity gate opening

This case study covers the opening of a gravity gate at Hikurangi Repo, near Whangārei. The gate is a concrete culvert with a steel flap that lets floodwater trapped on farmland drain back into the Wairua River as levels drop, instead of being pumped out in a way that harms tuna.

It came out of years of work between Ngā Kaitiaki o Ngā Wai Māori, local farmers, and Whangārei District and Northland Regional Councils, funded through Better Off Funding and the Hikurangi flood scheme rates.
