Mātauranga Kura Taiao Fund
Funding for Māori groups to preserve biodiversity knowledge.

This research project examines how environmental tohu and māramataka can support biodiversity management in a changing climate in northern Taranaki. It draws on the mātauranga of Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Maru to identify local tohu, document a kaupapa Māori model for understanding environmental change, and develop a taiao management framework.
The project also looks at how process-based climate and biodiversity modelling can sit alongside mātauranga without losing the integrity of either system. It covers environmental monitoring, restoration planning, and assessing local development or resource consent decisions in the context of climate change.
